I would be like, really productive. I don't know that it's fair to say I'm not productive, however. I mean, sure, if you take the word at it's literal meaning, my life could be more 'productive'. But if that's the case, there are very few things I do that are productive beyond what's necessary and I think I'm fairly normal in that respect. Hobbies are probably the exception. It all depends on where you draw the line between productive and non-productive.
Today for instance - I went to work as usual. I didn't do any planning on my lunch break, though I could have had I wanted to get ahead. Instead I chilled, ate kimbap in the sunshine, and listened to my ipod while updating some stuff in my knitting notebook. I managed to do a round on my shirt before Donald came down from lunch, and then I went in and worked some more. After work I went to the store and got some odd bits- they finally have button mushrooms again. (I saw tomatoes yesterday too... yum. Love spring)
then I came home, got on Rav and read a few threads about Mohammad and the religious history of textiles, and took a nap before waking up to do some online shopping (more on that later), talk to Lloyd and Cait, and read some blogs. Now I'm munching on dinner - leftover rice and soup - and typing this post. I don't feel that today is the most exciting day I've had - nor did I even look at the interminable list of things that I have plans to do (or the things that flit across my brain that I don't write down); but I don't particularly consider it to have been a waste of a day.
I'm not sure there's anything else conclusive to say on this subject , but it occurs to me - why do I think in terms of productive/unproductive? It's not that I particularly worry about it - i generally enjoy my time no matter what I'm doing (with exceptions), but for some reason, I feel like I *should* worry about it.
So, shopping. That was fun. I started on Knitpicks.com, a knitting site I have been meaning to check out - good quality stuff for relatively cheap prices. Catch: they only ship to the US. But since I have my handy-dandy friend Lloyd to send things to, I don't have to worry about that. And then I have more of an excuse to go back to Atl when I go home. -smile- They're having a sale on sock yarn so I got some of that for the eventuality that I will start making socks. also just because sock yarn is very pretty. and versatile. did i mention it was on sale?
Then I was off to thehungersite.com to check out their yarns. They have banana fiber yarn and beautiful recycled silk yarn which I was going to get to try. But then I saw their skirts - and you know how I love skirts. Especially long swishy ones for
summer.<--- this one I was debating getting the wine one, but I love blue, and I wear it a lot, and it matches a lot of things that I have. So blue it was.
I was so happy to see that they ship internationally. And the most awesome part - my shipping for the order was $10. to Korea. Sweetness!! Still need to go back for that yarn...
I poked around on overstock as well, and though they had some pretty stuff, nothing quite cheap enough for me. Then I remembered my friend Robin's suggestion about ebay for clothes, and off I waded into the mire. I found an awesome seller (whose site is here) that has a bunch of cute Nepali clothes. (I guess I'm on a 'support 3rd-world economy' kick tonight.) I submitted some offers on their ebay stuff and got ....
cute turqouise halter tank. love the embroidery. the old women around here will surely berate me for baring my shoulders, or at the very least glare balefully. Who cares?
also - green wrappy sarong skirt. It's awesome, and I can't wait till it get's here. it occurs to me that horizontal stripes maybe not the best idea, but I think it well be fine.
I'm bidding on another one as well, but we'll see if I win it.
then, THEN, I found this site:
Enwrapture Vintage
Now, I'm not sure I believe their claim that their reversible silk sari wrap skirts can be worn over a hundred ways, but they are pretty damn versatile. Also, drool-worthy gorgeous.
Like these:
Sadly, the second and third ones, which I LOVE, are sold out. -sigh- Maybe they'll be restocked? At $30ish dollars apiece though, they're really reasonable. I want to buy one, though I'm having trouble deciding on which one. (Neechan, see your email...) The shipping is okay - I emailed to ask if they do combined/reduced shipping so will have to see about that.
Gizmo is staring at me from a safe distance away and alternately washing himself so as not to look at me, as I've just walloped him. He's been really weird the past few days- I think no one told him that the neutering process was supposed to calm him down. He's been running and jumping onto the balcony, and tonight he kept trying to bite me. I had my feet up on my chair and he started biting my toes, and just now he was sitting calmly in my lap and then started gnawing on my arm. Well, that's not going to fly for sure, and he knows it.
Before bed, a snippet of conversation with Lloyd from earlier.
Lloyd:It's kinda late for dinner, ain't it?
I can just imagine that song - *sings* Kiiimbap, doo be dop a do wop...
Wouldn't that be great?
I've been knitting for most of the past week, and while I have made significant progress on the scarf, I'm wanting a break. So I think tonight is going to be a watch TV or read or perhaps do some watercolor night. Also, my wrist is starting to bother me.
Note that this did not stop me from buying yarn this evening at Gangnam. Well, to be fair, I bought some on Thursday, and I went back with a new SnB friend looking for the same colorway, cause I really liked it and I decided I didn't want to mix two different ones. I got my colorway. and some cute light green ribbon-y stuff that I think I wanna try to make a shawl out of. And the ajuma who runs the place gave me another ball and my needles for free, which was pretty sweet. She does stuff like that though - She gave me a free ball the other night too.
I have Kraft Mac now! I met Robin in Itaewon for lunch today and we went to this place called Macaroni Market. Their macaroni was decent, but I really have been just craving the cheap stuff, so she took me to a little shop that sells foreign food and I got a box of mac and cheese. The place was way overpriced, but that's to be expected. My box was roughly $3.50. They had Captain Crunch, but it was $12 for the big box and I was like, um, no. Yes, I'm serious. But as Robin said, why charge less than what people will pay? And yes, people will pay that here, to get American foods, especially if they don't have access to the base.
I ended up reading another Night World book last night/this morning before bed. I'm perfectly cognizant that, while I mock my sister for her reading tastes (bad yaoi and how to raise pigeons), my own are just as bad. But that's the huge difference - I recognize that I read bad stuff, and read it precisely for that reason. Also, I like to flatter myself that, while most of it is completely fluff (both types of metaphorically) there are some good parts. So this is what I was reading:
Morgead and Jez are awesomely funny. For one thing, Morgead gets angry really easily, and he has an abandonment complex cause his mom left him when he was 12 and he has really pretty green eyes that Smith (the author) is always comparing to emeralds. Not the most inventive image, I know. Oh! And floppy black emo hair that's always getting in his eyes. But she does come up with cool - a train as a white dragon. Anyway, my favorite part of the book has to be Morgead in one of his "Excited States" (minds out the gutter, please). Here's an excerpt:
~~~~
Spoiler: At this point Jez has been staked and is trying to die peacefully. Morgead takes umbridge at this.
And then, through the mist and the gold and the warmth and the peace, came a voice that wasn't gentle at all. That was roaring in sheer outrage and fury.
"DON'T YOU DARE DIE ON ME, JEZEBEL! DON'T YOU DARE! Or I'll follow you to the next world and KILL you."
Suddenly, in the pretty gold mist, she could see something else. The only thing in the universe that wasn't golden.
It was a silver cord.
"You come back and you do it right now," Morgead bellowed in her ears and in her mind. "Right now! Do you hear me?"
The peace was shattered. Nothing seemed quite so warm and wonderful anymore, and she knew that once Morgead got into one of his Excited States, he wouldn't stop yelling until he got what he wanted.
There's some more here but I don't feel like typing it all...
Jez whispered, "I told you never to call me Jezebel."
Then she fainted.
Aw, isn't that so cute and angsty and 17 and you wanna just cuddle him? -pets- It's okay, Morgead, I have red hair too, just like Jez.
Anyways - time for tv. or more reading. Robin gave me a copy of American Gods and lord knows people have been telling me to read that for forever. Still feel like water-coloring tho...
With the exception of my allergies appearing again (THANKS FOR SMOKING, MOM!!), today was a pretty good day.
Work was easy, did my new project with the 5 year old classes, and I think they had fun. It was a lot easier with Pansy class, since they are smaller and Pansy-teacher was there to help me. Tulip class knew more than I expected them to, and since I have two story classes with them a week I think I will use those to work with them on this clock thing - god knows it's more interesting than those ridiculous story books.
I finally got XP back on my computer, with nicely new formatted pieces. Of course, there are still things I have to do to get it back up to snuff and running like I want it, but I feel better knowing that it's on the way. I'll get the kinks worked out eventually, and hopefully when I do I will have a much better performing computer. At the very least, I would like to clean up my hard drive a lil bit - I have so much stuff that I know I don't need all of it.
And I have internet!! I'm still working on figuring out my video card, but having ethernet back is a major step.
Also cool, but unrelated - I finished the gauntlet last night!! It looks a lot better than the other one, but I still have to block, hem, and sew it. Then I can put the ties on and see how it comes out.
After work today, I went to the clinic again, with pretty much the same symptoms as last time - coughing like the dickens, sore throat, losing my voice. Once again, I have laryngitis, and my chronic rhinitis is not helping any. I told the doc that I wake up with some sort of respiratory ailment every few days at least. He said it's not something that can be fixed, so I just have to control the symptoms. Might need some more claritin, I think. He recommended a humidifier to help when I'm sleeping, and drinking lots of water, and gave me some pills. I was looking at those a couple days ago in homeplus - humidifiers are really popular here because most of the heating units make the air really dry. I don't use mine - the floor heating is usually enough, but I figured anything to help with my breathing.
So I got my scrips, and went to Jamsil. I could have gone to Garak, it's closer, but I wanted to stop by the Toys 'r' us that just opened, to look around and to get a new DS adapter - my old one doesn't work here, even with the plug adapter. I picked that up for cheap, wandered around to see if there was much interesting there, and then went to Lotte Mart just to see what they had, since I didn't feel like walking down to Homeplus. And they had a nice little humidifier on sale, and ALSO THEY HAD AN OVEN ON CLEARANCE FOR 30ish DOLLARS (because the exchange rate still sucks, you know). I totally grabbed it, cause I've been thinking about getting one for a while. NOW I CAN BAKE MY RED VELVET CAKE AND IT WILL BE YUMMY!!!!
Speaking of food, I'm starving. And I need a shower. And I need to clean up my room. But neechan, now we can play again!!
Well, today wasnt as bad as I thought it might be, considering my sleeping pattern last night. I got up and was at work on time and everything. Lunch was good - I always love kimchi nabe. But the weather - omigosh it was so cold today. Douglas said the weather forecast said possible snow, and it certainly felt like it could, but the only thing blowing in the wind was all the leaves. I'm going to have to break out my wool coat soon if this keeps up. Still, I had my little fleece cropped vest that I got in COEX the other night. It's super cute. See? Even the really hot Korean salesguy said so...
I wanted to get the cream-colored one that matched my bear mittens, but when I went back to the store with cash it was gone, so brown it was. And I wear enough stuff that matches brown that it doesn't matter. I think though that I definitely want to go to uniqlo and get myself another fleece from there, cause the one I had last year was a lifesaver, and much easier to wear than my big coat.After work I went to Seoul Station to meet Han's aunt and uncle who are visiting here for a few days. We had dinner at Bennigan's, where I had the strangest sandwich. It was called a monte cristo - normal ham/turkey/cheese sandwich. but for some reason the chef decided that this particular sandwich of the ones on the menu wouldn't cause enough of an arterial blockage. SO - they battered and fried it and sprinkled it with powdered sugar. Yeah, like a donut. Or a funnel cake. I swear, it was so strange, like eating your main course and dessert at the same time. it didnt really add to the flavor or the sandwich. And as I was walking out of the restaurant I saw the sign where they advertise that they specialize in healthy fusion food. Well, it was definitely fusion. I wish I had had my camera...
They asked if I wanted dessert or anything, and I pointed out that not only was I full, but I felt like I had already eaten dessert. So we walked around the department store there for a few minutes and then got some coffee at Dunkin Donuts. I don't like coffee, but they had something that looked intriguing - chrysanthemum tea. Thus, today's Korean word(s) of the day.
Kukhwa = chrysanthemum
Cha = tea
Technically, I already knew 'tea', cause of my kids. Sometimes I bring my mug of whatever I happen to have that day, and since the kids know by now that I don't like coffee, they try to guess what I have, cocoa or tea. Incidentally, the word in for 'coffee' is 'coppi', so the kids think it's really funny when I have to go make copies of a book or paper.
On the way there I finished my scarf, and also discovered that I can walk and knit at the same time - I was binding off as I was transferring lines, and so I just kept going as I was walking. I'm not sure if I could do more complicated stitches at the same time. I even managed to walk up the stairs and everything. So now it just needs to be blocked, and then it will be finished. It's supposed to have crocheting on the ends, but I don't know how to crochet, so we'll just leave it as is. I've also got that stuff that I promised to ball for Kate, and plenty of lessons to plan this week. Plus, I have a pokemon date with neechan, andI think i want to trade her some of my current ones before i start an entirely new game and get the other starters. btw, nick - i can play/trade with you too (and I'm sure jessica would love to as well), if you're not too busy with zelda. another thing i need to play. let's not talk about that though. I think I won't worry about starting my next gauntlet/Tim's scarf till the thursday meeting in Gangnam.
Now I've had my shower and I'm tired... I really wanna go to bed. I guess typing my thursday adventure will have to wait again, as will the superblogpostofdoom. and I have other things- some more progress reports to finish, a bank transfer to do (tomorrow)... blocking the scarf. ah screw it, those will wait. I'm going to bed.
I'm very happy with the way today went, not the least of which is my being able to type this while sitting in my comfy bed.
I woke up this morning and could barely breathe, so I knew the weather was kinda crappy. Also because the sun hadn't woken me up -when I looked outside, sure enough it was hazy as all get out and the sun was just a glowy-looking circle up above.
I was actually early getting to Jamsil, and then Sohee got there - Cait and her friend were running a lil bit late, so we waited on them... Unfortunately, when we actually got down to the rink they told us that it was going to be closed in a few mins for a half-hour break, so we went up to Pizza Hut to grab some lunch. Afterwards we came back down and skated for an hour until a show forced us off the rink. I only fell once, when I was trying to turn like Jen showed me and there was someone in front of me. I tried to avoid hitting them and landed on my left side. It wasn't that bad, just I was a bit wet because of it. I want to go there more often and practice if I can... I would like to be good at ice skating.
Ooh! Cait taught me a new word. I have heard it used mostly in the context of drinking, but here.
Mul = Water
Then I met Tim and his friend at COEX, this huge underground mall that was completely awesome. I bought a nice pair of jeans and a cute lil fleece vest (such a hot salesguy. and he told me I was cute!) on sale. They're guys, but they fit me not too badly, tho i think i might see if i can do something to me them less loose in my hips. We wandered around for a bit more - there's a huge bookstore there with lots of English stuff. I was annoyed at the obviously used books they were attempting to sell for full price, but what the hey. can't do much about that.
I found something that looked really interesting called The Black Hole War. And I also considered getting Foucalt's Pendulum, but Tim wanted to leave, and I have a ton of books to read already. I haven't touched anymore of The Fountainhead, but I will get around to it eventually.
After a while the other two got tired, so they left, but I wanted to poke around some more. They have an entire shop full of puzzles, right behind the aquarium. They also have a kimchi museum, but by all accounts it's not very interesting. I found a Nintendo store, quite by accident, and got one of those USB connector thingys for cheap. Now I just need to get Matthew to tell me how to set it up so that I can get my friend code for Pokemon. I attempted it tonight, and managed to connect, but it keeps telling me I haven't yet. I might try it with my Animal Crossing, which isn't in Japanese, and might be easier to navigate. I also picked up a longer ethernet cable, hence my happiness at typing from my bed as opposed to having to sit in my chair and slump over.
In addition, I got a puzzle from that shop - it's that artist that neechan likes, alphonse maria marche, who does the women in art nouveau style. This one is four women representing times of the day. They have some other beautiful ones - this artist called Kagaya has some fantasy stuff. She does a zodiac series, and while I'm not particularly in love with the Leo, some of the other ones are beautiful. There was also - and this surprised the hell out of me - a series of three puzzles entitled "Railway in the Stars," or something like that. ZOMG!! Miyazawa!! They were pretty, and I might go back and get them some other time.
While I was walking back through one of the places after getting a thing for my mom, I saw a floor cleaner with the name "Tennant" on the front of it, and I laughed. Also noteworthy, though I didn't get a pic of it, was a store that advertised clothes made by Jesus. And lastly, some pics from the subway station that I found amusing -
They are adverts for a Chinese beer called Tsingtao. So of course they use pandas to advertise it. Pandas drink lots of beer, you know.
Really. I don't know why it's taking forever. Maybe cause I'm dling stuf from itunes and dling torrents and doing web thingys at the same time, but that's still no excuse.
I have had a good day today. Tuesdays are pretty chill cause I have a 3 hour break between my classes, and even though I meant ot come home and work on progress reports today, I took a nap. I was tired. I was up late lastn ight cause I was so excited about getting to go back to Japan for New Year's that I couldn't sleep till sometime around 4 am. Also, there were more mogi in my room.
So class as usual. No big deal there. I probably should be getting to bed soon cause I have a full day tomorrow, but I remembered that I needed to post. Ack! I have a video for you today, neechan. Not edited, but I thought it didn't really need it anyway.
Today I went to the Center for the Birth of Baha'u'llah. It's also the anniversary of Matt proposing to Amanda. I always remember that cause she called me when I was at Freshman Semi-Formal that year and I was standing outside the Fox with a hundred people around me going "He did WHAT!?!?" This was a perfectly reasonable response on my part, consdering they met in August of that year. The program tonight was fun... I met and re-met a lot of people and though I'm fairly certain that there are at least 2 names I don't remember, it's okay cause I know their faces at least. Aruna gave me a ride home, which was good because I'm almost out of money on my subway pass, and I need to put more on.
And then I came home, and was poking around the Itunes store looking for a John Mayer song that I used to have but for some reason can't find anymore. There's one torrent of it, but it has no seeds so I just gave up and decided to spend a dollar on the song. And then then THEN I found the Doctor Who TV OST!! You know me, I love OSTs, if they are good, and the DW one is, and I'd thought about trying to find it before. There aren't any torrents of it that I've been able to find. And you know I NEVER buy music, or I do so about once every blue moon. But this is such great stuff that I honestly don't mind paying $10 for the album. Especially cause I know I will listen to a lot of it. Some soundtracks are only good with their context, but this one is good enough to just listen to.
Okay, I really need to get to bed cause I have a bunch of stuff to do tomorrow - emails and a letter and some other things. Have to transfer that money so that i can finally pay bills. More scarf. Etc. Remind me to post those articles about china. and my laptop dilemma.
Okay, yeah, I didn't need to buy anymore shirts. But I saw this, and it had cute flowers and was $5. And then I looked at the text, and realized, yes, I really did need to buy it.
Please note the lyrics from the Pink song, "Get This Party Started". Although, I'm wondering if, because they spelled 'up' as 'yp', does it really count as a violation? If I had Pink's address, I would totally send her this shirt. As it is, I will enjoy wearing it on my own...
Also! Before I forget! Today's Korean Word of the Day is
sadari = ladder
This from Lily Class
Neechan, another video is on the way. Stop freaking. If all else fails, there's always CuteOverload. She's not really being cute right now - more annoying. She's trying to climb on my computer, even though I keep repeatedly putting her back on the floor. here's a pic for you though.
Lots of things happened, so here goes -
- Thursday - took a long nap till midnight, then stayed up playing AoE and reading the last of the Primes novels till 8 am on Friday
- Friday - woke up late and got to the Baha'i meeting as it was ending around 430 pm. Met a bunch of Baha'is and found out about feasts and study circles. Went to meet Tim for dinner, met his recently arrived teacher friend Christina. She's pretty cool.
- Saturday - wandered around Dongdaemun and found yarn. Dongdaemun Shopping Town = awesome. It's five floors of craftiness. Bought a wallet from a street vendor, wandered around town some more, then met Tim again for dinner and norebang with his Korean friend. Yay for shabu-shabu.
- Sunday - went up to Hyehwa to meet the Stitch-n-Bitch group. That was lots of fun, and it was good to be around people who can help me with my knitting. I learned what k2tog means! Then went to Itaewon for Indian food with Kate, a new friend from SnB and got hit on by sketchy Indian dude. Started watching Elfen Lied.
- Today - finished sewing lining into green knit bag. Looked for knitting patterns online to keep from napping, then read a Dark-Hunter book. Got box from Mamaw and had PB and J for dinner. Cleaned up my apartment. FINALLY shaved my legs, now that i have my razor back.
in case you can't see the image: 'We're the 1% (only anarchists are pertty) who don't FIT and don't care." Rnainc.SlangMF
I'm not really sure about the last part, but it's fairly amazing.
