This afternoon went well, I thought. I managed to have a class with Luis and Erica that didn't leave me ready to kill someone or cry, and it went more quickly than I expected. I'm going to try to come up with as many activities as possible for them, so if something doesn't work out, I can just quit. I did lose Luis to the blocks for a bit, but I decided not to make an issue of it; and of course, there was some sticker-bribing. That's okay, I think - anything to make them pay attention.
After I finished and went back to the office, I looked around for Donald, since he's usually ready to leave before I am on Tuesday/Thursday. The principal had abducted him to teach him Korean, Joan said, and the rest of us laughed a bit about it. Joan told me I should go rescue him, but when I walked past the office he didn't look particularly desperate, so I figured I'd give it a few minutes. Instead, I took my camera and went to take a picture that I'd been meaning to get for a while.
Here it is:
The first time I saw this, I was understandably confused. But I guess ignoble laminating film would be a pain to work with. It's only this A3 size that has it, though. The regular A4 has a picture of a tiger in a jungle, which, while also slightly mind-boggling, is nowhere near the entertainment level of this one.
When I had finished taking my picture, I wandered into Tulip class with my camera to see what the all-day class was up to. Actually, I had seen Kim-teacher carrying a tray of fried rice in there, so I knew what was up. I started talking to some of the girls in my small pieces of Korean, which always gets them excited. They laugh and clap for me, "Siobhain-teacher, very good job!!" I sat down to talk to them, and they quizzed me on what words I knew in Korean. I knew most of what they asked me - tree, eye, sun, fried rice; except for 'face' which I can't for the life of me remember now. I got a bowl of rice and ate with them, and took some pictures, which they thought was funny. They like posing for pictures, and think it's even funnier to look at them afterwards. I played with editing some of them tonight.
Here's Emily and Annie, with the usual Asian pose. Cheese!
Here's a better shot of the boys, without Hannah. David is Emily's twin - have I mentioned that we have an amazing amount of twins at my school? Srsly - there are like 6 sets of them, and that's not an exaggeration. But David and Emily are my favorites I think.
The hearts in the background were entirely coincidental, but I thought they were funny - the kids always like to joke about who loves each other. It's usually a fair amount of "Siobhain-teacher, Donald-teacher, love!" or any other combination of two (or three) teachers, depending on how silly the kids are being. But I really want to caption this picture, "Gregory, David, love?"
Lastly, two pictures of Christina, one edited and one not. I'm not sure which one I like better. Christina is a sweet little girl, and she always reminds me of xtna, both in looks and attitude. She's very playful. Here, she was laughing about one of my responses to her questioning on my and Donald's non-relationship.
In other news, there's not much here. I measured my shirt last night, and got 41cm, but when I measured again later, I was only at 39 - but that's okay!! I'm almost done - with the stockinette tunic part anyway!! Soon I can switch needles and do the top part, and then the sleeves. I can't wait. I'm thinking of starting another project in the meantime though, just for some instant gratificatin - i can't decide if I wanna try the socks I've been considering for a while or do the presents for julie and bethany that I've been putting off... We'll see.
Now, I need to go plan my open class lesson, since I spent 4 hours napping this evening. Didn't mean to, and woke up with mogi bites and an allergically-swollen lip, but I guess that's my bad for sleeping with the window open. Probably should eat some dinner too. Maybe when I get done with that, I will let myself do some knitting or reading. I'm going to be up for another couple hours anyway, I guess.
Just thinking about that line makes me laugh - it's the first thing that the Gingerbread Man says in our play. Which, actually, is next Saturday. Wow, time flies. I'm going to try to get someone to video tape it for me, but I don't know how that will turn out, cause I will have to be directing them on stage. I might take my camera when we do the practice and film them then. Some parts are just adorable - Lina in Rose Class does some of the dance moves likes she's having a seizure, and it's hilarious. I really wish my camera could do zoom when it's in video mode, but alas. No such luck.
Okay, back to the topic at hand - Here it is! Took me just under two weeks, with blocking and all. I give you, Argosy!
Now what? I thought about starting the teddy bears, or that hood/cowl, but I think I am going to take a break for a few days and read a book or something. For one, my right wrist is bothering me. (So obviously, I'm trading knitting for updating my blog tonight...) I'm going to wear my brace some more and see if that helps. It doesn't hurt, really, it just feels... tired. And tingly as well. -sigh- I wonder if my generation will have higher instances of carpal tunnel syndrome. At least it doesnt cut down on my typing speed too much to only use one hand. Can still type faster than the rest of my family... -smirk-
one thing that did make me happy - my internet connection finally straightened itself out, so my ravelry is back, as are other important sites, like the ones to pay my student loan bills. I sent some money back to pay them today and am now officially broke until I get paid on the 10th. I have like, 9 dollars in my checking account and $30 in cash. Fun fun. My fault tho. No more yarn for me. Not like I don't have enough anyway. Need to destash.
for the moment, however, i think i am going to focus on jewelry making. i am finally getting motivated to design that key chandelier necklace that's been floating round in my head. Also, this weekend Tim intro'd me to his friend Cara, who is a producer/composer (and Korean pop idol Rain's former world tour concert master. srsly). We went shopping together, and she found some earrings she really liked, but her ears aren't pierced. They looked pretty simple, so I told her I would make her some, and we're going to Dongdaemun Saturday to get the stuff for that. Should be fun. I'll post pics on here when I do them.
Also happened to meet a man from uzbekistan on the way home on tuesday night on the subway. he didn't speak english, and i don't speak korean really, but we managed some semblance of a conversation. which ended with him asking for my phone number, -sigh- Didn't make sense, really. He asked me to get dinner with him, but i had already eaten. And why would you ask for someone's number when you can barely hold a conversation with them? The fact that he looked in his 40s and smelled of alcohol didn't win him any points either.
I've finished two series in the past week, but I have yet to write about one of them. Last night I couldn't sleep, though, so I scribbled down some thoughts on merlin. Obviously, spoilers and ranting. You've been warned.
*****
My first thoughts were, "This is not as good as Doctor Who/Torchwood." Not the best comparison, but those are the other BBC shows I am familiar with. Granted, Merlin is written for a different audience, but even in terms of quality, they aren't the same. Not that there haven't been some pretty bad eps in the Whoniverse (looking at you, "Cyberwoman" and "Countrycide"), but still.
Overall, I enjoyed this, but I really hope there's another season 'cause so many things that were left undone bothered me. Like, ALL OF THE SUB-PLOTLINES.
-- No closure on Arthur/Merlin. Obviously I didn't expect full on boy-sex, but some sort of revelation or understanding would have been nice. Not, "Arthur, don't be a prat I'm gonna go die for you now."
-- What happened to the pairings? It's like the writers started out with one idea and then completely scrapped that in favor of going along with slashdom. Then they bring in this half-assed thing with Gwen and Arthur, as if they suddnely decided they needed to do something with some connection to actual Arthurian legend after almost a season of complete disregard. And Gwen's character is already awkward enough, which has been demonstrated numerous times by her complete inability to interact with any of the guys without making herself look a fool / mistakenly saying something that no one but she will take the wrong way.
-- Uther and Morgana. um. can you say "electra complex"? or "just sketchy" might be better. maybe that's just my "didn't grow up with a father figure" bias, but personally i think their relationship is a little creepy.
-- THE ENTIRE FINALE. I mean, srsly, WTF? the writers really made Merlin an ass, and almost as much as much of a prat as Arthur. First he's all bitchy to Morgana, who probably is freaked cause she's having visions, although her coming outside all half-dressed and hysterical wasn't the best idea.
then the dragon. Yeah, Merlin, the dragon has been manipulating you for a while 'cause e has nothing to do but sit in his cave and ship you and his royal prat-ness all day, but rly? You're pretty dense not to have picked up on it before now, so you have no right to be angry, since it's only been obvious to everyone else since, like, the FIRST EPISODE.
Did I mention Merlin's totally hypocritical, as well as immature? Sure, yeah, do anything to save Arthur. No, wait, that person can't die! No, not that one either. His comment to Gaias about "We haven't done everything we're meant to do," (which also came from the DRAGON) - but you can't do anything if you go off and DIE for him. I understand he's all teenage powerful warlock being a rebel and refusing to accept what people tell him, but come on. People DIE. It HAPPENS. This would have been a good time for Merlin to start realizing that you can't save everyone. Obviously, he's not ready to lose his mentor, and Arthur's not ready to be king. (Though in my opinion, Hunith is totally expendable.) But... ugh.
And even though Nimueh is a complete bitch, it pissed me off how Merlin was so fine with killing her to fulfill HIS END of a bargain, but not with sacrificing any of the people who matter to him. Sure, Arthur is most important, but not to the point that other people are allowed to die. Obviously, there's not a lot of emotional sympathy for Nimueh anyway (the villains here are kinda flat), but to me it still smacks of hypocrisy. Or the inability to look a situation maturely and rationally.
Despite all this, I'm definitely going to continue to watch, in hopes that the writers grow. I understand that letting characters die is not something that many are comfortable with/ can pull off believably, but still. I was disappointed. Add that to the lack of resolution of ANYTHING in the series, and I was just kind of disgusted afterwards. Still, I'm glad the series made me think so much. Perhaps I will write something more formal about it in the future.

Okay, bedtime now. If I don't get distracted by Rav again...
This is not it.
I would take the pics and stuff that I wanted to post, and it was going to be cute and such, but right now I am too sick to do anything more than sit comforter-wrapped in my chair with my humidifier turned all the way up and wish my fucking heater worked while I type this. I'm thinking about knitting, but my head is killing me and I keep coughing, and I'm so thirsty. The meds the doc gave me made my throat go away, but I'm still not completely better. I tried listening to music, but that makes my head hurt more, so I think I don't need to stare at my computer for too long either.
Today was a normal day, sortof.. I didn't get to go for waffles with Tulip-teacher cause she had to go to her mother's, but I came home and took a nap. Classes were normal - I brought some stuff home with me to work on my planning of my time unit. My afternoon class was observed for a few minutes by Debbie and wong jam nim, and of course Clara wasn't paying attention and the others were nervous because they were being watched. They did much better when no one else was there, and I loosened up, cause I didn't feel awkward about playing with them or letting them get off topic. I try to discourage it, but as long as they are speaking English, I don't really care too much.
Which leads me to the point of my post. I like having long hair but it tends to get in my way, so I usually put it up in my clip. The way I do it, it usually fans out a little the the side. Today for some reason a few skeins decided to stand straight up, but I didn't really bother about it. Until I was in English Land, and Jennifer was asking me about my hair, something to the effect of commenting that it wasn't blonde on top anymore. So in the midst of this discussion about hair, James pipes up,
"Siobhain-teacher hair, 12 o'clock!"
I was a bit confused for a second, and then I realized what he was saying. I'd been teaching them time, and while James is not the smartest kid I have, he likes to use English in creative ways and make connections if it will help him express himself. In another instance of this, I was teaching them 'hay house' for the performance of The Three Little Pigs, and since I had recently taught them "Hey!" as a greeting, James immediately started waving and saying, "Hey house!" Then I had to explain that the two weren't the same, but I was still impressed by that. And his comment today made me laugh, even though my voice was still a bit shot.
And lastly, though I have been a bit lax with these lately, Korean word of the day!
Today's word is
sudu = chicken pox
Lately a lot of kids have been absent because of chicken pox, so when I asked the other children, "Where is everybody?" they explained to me that the other kids have sudu. Debbie had explained to Douglas and I about it earlier, but it was still interesting to learn the word, and to teach them the English, which they thought was funny.
Oddly, chicken pox is treated very differently here than in the West. Debbie was worried about Douglas and I, and told us, "Be careful if you haven't gotten the chicken pox shot."
"Shot? What shot?" Apparently here people get vaccinated against chicken pox, so she was worried about us catchin it. We explained to her that at home, doctors encourage children to get chicken pox when they are younger since it's dangerous when you are an adult. She seemed very surprised by this, and especially by Douglas' description of 'chicken pox parties' (which might be a British thing, but I was by myself when I got it) where parents invite other parents to bring their children so that they all get the disease at the same time. Another interesting tidbit of Korean life.
I think I'm going back to bed now. I'm hungry, but too tired to eat.
On a lot of stuff lately. You may have noticed that I have been posting a lot of books - I've been reading like crazy, so I havent done much else. I haven't forgotten about the Korean word of the day though. I'm going to backpost the ones I have. But for today:
Aurum = Ice
and
Mokkuri = necklace
Both of these from Lily Class this morning. I am wearing my necklace of paua shells today, and they commented on it as soon as i came in. And in reviewing the letter "i" they couldnt remember the word for 'ice cube' so they just shouted it in Korean. It came up in Rose Class later too, when I was explaining the word 'hail' to them.
